Experiences with some of the different bb systems...
-
Over the years I have had the pleasure of using numerous different bulletin board systems. I cracked my cherry on phpBB2, and to this day it is my all time favorite. This system was so versatile and customizable it was crazy what you could do with this one. I used phpBB2 in the day of the game Freelancer when modded servers were all the rage. I ran one of the most popular servers and some of you may remember it, the Asgard RPG Server. By far phpBB2 had its issues but if you modded it right, it was very stable and feature rich.
Ever since phpBB3 came out I've had a bad taste in my mouth for it. I've never liked how permissions are set up in there and that is my main complaint. The methodology differences between 2 and 3 were so far off it was crazy. I never got that bad taste out of my mouth. It is a widely used system and I will give it credit where due but my personal preferences are somewhat different.
SMF is a really great system and both versions 1.x and 2.x are awesome. Coupled with ezPortal and you've got yourself a very nice setup. Within minutes you can have a fully functional website with pages and forums with a clean and professional look.
AEF is sort of an odd-ball but it has features that no other system has. I enjoy some of the features this system employs and the method at which you accomplish them. If you couple AEF with a portal it can make for a very nice setup as well but for some reason the theme library for AEF is lacking in a bad kind of way. I think until AEF gets a ton more themes to choose from it is not one I will use.
Fluxbb is a nice and simplistic bulletin board system that can be customized at will. If you are looking for something simple then perhaps this is for you. Don't get us wrong, Fluxbb can be heavily modified and can run with the big dogs.
My new favorite is Vanilla. This little system has grown in leaps and bounds in the past year and those coders over there are hard at it. Some of the plugins and applications they have are quite impressive. As you can see, we use this one for our website and it is highly customizable.
All in all it is up to the end user what they want hosted. Look around at the different systems and then once you've decided on what you want to use, register with us and apply for hosting. It is quite simple and is quickly setup.
